Thursday, September 13: Spares and Pairs' 60th Birthday!
Sixty years ago, many square dance clubs were composed of paired members -- spouses, families, boyfriend/girlfriends, etc. Spares and Pairs was formed by a group of people who wanted to make sure solo dancers could come to a dance knowing they would find other solo people they could dance with.
We are still a group of solos and pairs and every Mainstream dancer/round dancerr is welcome! We'll be marking sixty years (a long time for square dance clubs!) with a party. Please come celebrate with us, check out some old square dancing memorabilia, and enjoy decorations and birthday cake. Larry Fruetel will start calling Mainstream tips at 7 pm. Sarah Klaphake will cue round dances between tips.
Thursday, September 19: Intro to Square Dance session
Thursday, September 26: Track 2 session
Our Track 2 program adds to the calls you learn in our Intro sessions. If you feel confident dancing at our Intros, this is your next step. If you're looking to return to square dancing, we strongly recommend a quick brushup at some Intro sessions before trying Track 2.
Dancers should pick up the remaining calls in 4-5 sessions. If you have to miss a session, no worries -- come the next month. You'll dance previously-learned calls and be shown new ones. Eventually you will cover the ones you missed.
There is a $5 charge for each Track 2 session.
Thursday, October 3: Intro to Square Dance session
Thursday, October 10: Spares and Paris
This month's theme was born when we typed too quickly and misspelled part of our name. We got to thinking about what a square dance would look like if it had a French accent.
Even though all square dances are called in English, we wondered if dancers would wear Paris fashions (we hope). Will the treats recall French cuisine? (We hope that, too!) Will someone explain the French origins of square dance terms like promenade, allemande, and do-si-do? (You can pretty much count on this one.)
We don't know if our caller or cuer have any French ancestry but we'll find out! Larry Fruetel will start calling Mainstream tips at 7 pm and we'll have rounds between tips until 9.
